FPOA Benefits & Program Services: The Association provides benefits and services to its members which include: Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance;training and continuing education in law enforcement; and community awareness programs, some of which include: Legislative representation; the Florida Peace Officers' Association represents the interests of law enforcement and the public by maintaining a vigilant watch over all Legislative Bills in Tallahassee that affect law enforcement. The Association lobbied successfully for the passage of Florida Statutes Chapter 185, which created the state administered Municipal Police Officer's Retirement Fund, and remains a staunch advocate and protector of the following (which are only some of the successful legislative efforts of the Association since founded in 1927). Florida Statutes provisions which the Association lobbied for and was successful in securing the passage of; creation of the Florida Highway Patrol; Death Benefits Funds and Education for Beneficiaries Of Law Enforcement Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty; payment of Health Insurance Premiums for Spouse and Dependent Children of Law Enforcement Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty; Approval of equipment, testing procedure, qualification and competence of individuals to conduct chemical analysis for testing of motor vehicle drivers to determine if under the influence of intoxicating beverages; the training and issuance of permits to individuals to conduct such tests; provision requiring motor vehicle drivers to take administered tests to determine whether the driver is under the influence of an intoxicating beverage or drug; unlawful sale of firecrackers (which has saved children and adults from bodily injury including blindness, loss of fingers, and hands); retirement benefits for law enforcement officers special risk class; creation of police standards and training commission, standards and training requirements, certification for employment creation of correctional officers standards and training council, standards and training requirements, certification for employment; creation of criminal justice standards and training commission, standards and training requirements, certification for law enforcement officers and others in becoming forensic artists.
